ChemCentre is delighted to be providing research and analytical services to Perth NRM, for the “Establishing a Natural Capital Accounting (NCA) framework”, a statewide natural resource stewardship project to inform land stewardship investment.
ChemCentre scientists Dr Rajesh Sharma and Ken Dods will be involved in the Perth NRM project, which recently secured a Community Stewardship grant for the project (total value $710,000) to advance the stage 2 NCA framework to inform land stewardship investment in Western Australia.
The project is one of 96 community projects across the State to share in the State Government Community Stewardship Grants program which will provide a total of $7.5 million towards helping to protect and improve WA’s land, water and biodiversity assets.
Natural Capital refers to the environmental assets used to generate ecosystem services such as food production – water, carbon, biodiversity – which are not necessarily captured in financial reporting. Unmanaged, ecosystem services can 'draw-down' on the existing Natural Capital, which can lead to land degradation, with declining productivity and land stewardship.
This project builds on Perth NRM's pilot NCA project, funded by Commonland, to develop an NCA framework with farmers and industry stakeholders to enable them to measure Natural Capital and establish land stewardship for sustainable farm management.
With this NCA framework in place, it is expected that farmers and industry stakeholders will have an improved understanding and capacity to manage and develop Natural Capital.
Providing expert chemical analysis and insight for this project is a demonstration of ChemCentre's commitment to sustainable industry, valuable research and supporting the WA community.
