ChemCentre has formalised a landmark agreement with Curtin University- the Curtin-ChemCentre Alliance, strengthening ties and growing the State’s scientific research capability.
The Alliance brings together Curtin University’s excellence in teaching and research and ChemCentre’s leading chemistry expertise and 135-year history of achievements as the State’s premier chemical science facility.
ChemCentre Chief Executive Officer, Peter McCafferty, who with Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research, Curtin University, Professor Chris Moran today signed the Alliance agreement at a formal ceremony, said the Alliance will enable both Curtin and ChemCentre to grow their scientific research capability and develop stronger community engagement linkages.

ChemCentre has a rich history of collaborative research demonstrating significant benefits for Western Australia. These include:
- The Becher Process– the backbone of the world’s mineral sands industry;
- Trace element, lupin and broadacre research that has promoted agriculture in our State;
- Techniques to determine acid sulfate soils, beneficial uses for mineral by-products, the fate of oil spills and chemical ‘fingerprinting’ environmental contaminants;
- Establishment of new or value-added industries in WA including honey, forestry and medicinal cannabis; and
- Forensic fibre database, synthetic cannabis, novel psychoactive substances and proteomic techniques that have advanced forensic science.
A future focus of the Alliance will be on new research, enabling the strengths of our combined capabilities to be put to the task of solving the bigger challenges. This will mean larger projects, with more funding and duration, building on a trend of ChemCentre research and innovation of recent times.
